Karin A. Gregory
Ms. Gregory's career spans over 25 years in the healthcare field, as a basic scientist, healthcare administrator, lawyer and venture capitalist.
Ms. Gregory began her career in healthcare in 1980 at MIT in basic science research and then at Dana Farber Cancer Institute where she ran a successful start up outpatient department devoted to breast cancer.
In 1988 she shifted to the law, having just completed her health services masters studies, focused in Technology and Policy at the Franklin Pierce Law Center. Thereafter, she provided legal services to healthcare organizations in private practice as well as in the public sector. She held the position of Chief Administrative Officer and counsel to the Trustees of Health and Hospitals where she established the technology transfer function and oversaw the pre and post award grants and contracts office, IRB for $110M of outside funds for basic science and clinical research. She also held the position of Division Director for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health in the Epidemiology and Immunization program managing over $50M in state and federal contracts.
In early 1998, Ms. Gregory repositioned her career and joined the Massachusetts Technology Development Corporation (MTDC), an early stage, state-sponsored venture capital firm located in Boston as an investment professional. There, Ms. Gregory took responsibility for 12 investments, sourced 8 of those and brought those to the Board for a first time investment. Of the 12 companies, 7 were medical technologies. Over the course of her tenure with MTDC, she increased the number of healthcare investments and initiated closer ties with the medical entrepreneurial and investment communities. In mid 2002, Ms. Gregory left MTDC and co-founded Dover Medical Ventures, L.P., an early stage medical device venture capital fund and eMedicus, Inc., a commercial IRB for the review and monitoring of clinical research studies being conducted by pharmaceutical and device companies in the field of oncology.
In 2005, Ms. Gregory teamed up with Donald Furman to form Furman Gregory LLC to represent early stage health care and technology companies and to offer business consultation to these companies and other entities, including private equity funds. Her background and experience over the past twenty years with technology commercialization and small business positions her well to counsel clients on the daily issues facing them. She is involved with several New England-based, not for profit organizations as an advisor or board member, continues her involvement with the Massachusetts medical device industry and is also working with several organizations in Maine to grow the biotechnology/medical technology industry there.
Presently, Ms. Gregory serves as the Vice Chairman of the board of the Pierce Law Center, Chairperson on the facilities committee of the University of New England Board of Trustees, and serves on the boards of Fluid Imaging Technology, CEI Ventures, Inc., Small Enterprise Growth Fund, the Biotechnology Association of Maine, the Biddeford Coastal Coalition, Ovations for the Cure of Ovarian Cancer, Affinity of Maine, the Maine Technology Institute's Biotechnology review panel, the Bigelow Laboratory for Oceanographic Sciences' Advisory Board, the City of Biddeford Conservation Commission and its Open Space Planning Committee. In addition, she sits on the Heart of Biddeford Economic Restructuring committee. She is an assistant professor at the University of New England where she teaches in the Master's in Public Health program and is a guest speaker at many business and public health events throughout the New England area.
Ms. Gregory holds a B.A. degree from Wells College in Biochemistry, an M.P.H. from Boston University in Health Services, and a J.D. degree from Franklin Pierce Law Center. She also has received a certificate in Advanced Licensing from the Pierce Law Summer Institute and has taken several executive courses in business at Babson College and MIT's Sloan School.
Currently, Ms. Gregory's practice focuses on life sciences companies and research institutes. She represents several Boston-based, life sciences and medical device and other high technology companies. She serves as in-house general counsel for the Maine Institute for Human Genetics and Health and the Institute for Pediatric Innovation along with several for profit clients. The majority of the practice involves business counsel and advising on partnering, regulatory issues, including FDA and FTC issues of advertising and promotion of medical products, licensing, collaboration agreements, issues of confidentiality and invention protection, venture capital and strategic corporate partnering along with other related business transactional matters.
She is admitted in Massachusetts and Maine.
